Unbagged leaves and grass are collected and separated for composting at
Mechanicsville, Courthouse and Elmont Convenience Centers and the Route 301 Transfer Station.
The Route 301 Transfer Station and the Mechanicsville Convenience
Center accept brush that is less than 4
inches diameter and 6 feet long. These two locations grind brush into mulch,
some of which is available free to residents.
Trees and stumps are not accepted at any convenience center or the Route 301 Transfer Station.
However, limbs between 4" - 12" in diameter and less than 6' in length are accepted at the Route 301 Transfer Station only at the commercial disposal fee.
Category One Compost is made by Hanover County from leaves and grass. The compost has been tested by the nationally accredited Woods End Lab and received its highest rating of Garden Compost which allows for any use. The compost is available at the Route 301 Transfer Station at a loaded rate of $10 per cubic yard with a minimum of five cubic yards. Always call (804) 365-3220 to check on availability.
