What Can I Recycle?

Goodwill/Reuse areas/Clothing 

  • Clothing, sheets/towels/shoes accepted at all locations
  • Must be clean and placed in plastic bags
  • Place in blue Goodwill trailers or containers
  • Goodwill trailer or container ( Mechanicsville and Elmont)/reuse areas (all others): furniture in good condition, jewelry, antiques, DVDs, CDs, tapes, dishes, pans, silverware, small electronics (radios, clocks, lamps, toasters, etc.), working flat screen TVs, computers, printers, monitors, bikes and wagons in good condition, books
  • All electronic items must be in working condition

Aluminum and steel cans 

  • No aerosol cans
  • No scrap metal
  • Place together with plastic and glass bottles in co-mix containers


  • Place in antifreeze drum


  • Empty refrigerators, stoves, washing machines, hot water heaters
  • Any appliance containing refrigerant (Freon) must be placed in open waste container with care
  • Businesses must use 301 Transfer Station and pay commercial fees  


  • Alkaline batteries and button batteries are safe in regular trash
  • Lead acid batteries, rechargeable batteries
  • Auto batteries


  • Corrugated cardboard only
  • No cardboard with any type of glossy finish or coating
  • Must be flattened and placed in marked container as designated

Drums and Tanks

  • Must be empty, rinsed and contain no gaseous matter
  • Both ends must be completely open


Residential Only

  • Small electronics (radios, clocks, lamps, toasters, etc.) can be recycled at any location
  • Working computers, TVs, Stereos, VCRs can only be recycled at Goodwill trailers at Mechanicsville and Elmont or the electronics collection trailer at the Rt. 301 Transfer Station  

Residential and Commercial

  • $10 per non-flat screen TV or monitor under 27 inches measured diagonally (only at Rt. 301 Transfer Station)
  • $20 per non-flat screen TV or monitor larger than 27 inches measured diagonally (only at Rt. 301 Transfer Station)
  • No charge for flat screen TV or monitor

Commercial fees will apply to businesses in addition to the above charges

Fluorescent Lights 

  • For residents only: compact and tube fluorescent lights may be double-bagged and placed in the trash
  • Compact fluorescent lights may be recycled at local home improvement stores
  • Tube fluorescent lights may be recycled at various commercial processors located throughout the region 


  • Place leaded and unleaded gasoline in Category 1 waste drum  


  • Clear, green/light blue and brown glass bottles and jars
  • No caps or bottle tops
  • Place together with plastic bottles and metal cans in co-mix containers  

Large Metals 

  • Appliances as previously detailed
  • Swing sets and other metal play equipment
  • Exercise equipment
  • Bikes and wagons
  • Other metal items such as metal file cabinets, shelves and like
  • No items that have previously contained flammable or hazardous materials


  • Drain fluids and place in designated container 

Mixed Paper 

  • Newspaper, magazines, catalogs, “junk mail”, grocery bags, computer paper, cereal/dry food boxes
  • No gift wrapping paper, napkins, tissues, books  


  • Place in oil tank
  • Also accept automatic transmission fluid, power steering fluid, gear oil, hydraulic oil, diesel fuel and kerosene
  • Place used oil filters in labeled drum  


  • Not accepted for recycling
  • Must be dried to a paste and placed in trash
  • Mulch available at all locations to form paste 


  • Soda, water, detergent and shampoo bottles, milk and juice containers, plastic cups and other tub containers, non-styrofoam take out trays, plastic bottles (1-7 plastics) with lids and caps
  • Plastic/waxy coated milk/juice cartons and juice boxes
  • Plastic cups and other plastic food containers
  • No plastic bags or styrofoam
  • Place together with glass bottles and metal cans in co-mix containers
  • No household hazardous waste (herbicides, pesticides) or motor oil containers

Propane Tanks 

  • Recyclable up to 20 pounds
  • Place 1 pound units in open top container, not compactor 


  • Residents can bring 4 tires up to 32 inches in diameter per day to any location without fee
  • Larger tires up to a road tractor are accepted at the Rt. 301 Transfer Station only for $8 per tire or $130 per ton
